The roar of the flames was now in his ears, and Alexander could feel them licking his skin. The heat had replaced the chill, and it was getting unbearable, his throat closing up.

“East.”

Hands touched his arms, and Alexander jumped. Only then did he realize that Arabella had moved towards him, looking up at him in concern. Her hands on his arms were surprisingly soothing, pushing back the pain and fear welling inside him. Alexander found that he could breathe a little better, and he swallowed.

“I … the floor was unstable. The fire had burned it enough that it broke apart when I stepped on it. I fell through the floor, and then … I don’t remember anything until I woke up in bed three days later. Only to find … well, what you can see.” He gestured at his face. “The knowledge that our parents were dead and I was mutilated for life left me in a state of shock.
